Call for Proposals: 4th International Mobile Music Workshop

February 14th, 2007 by atau

MOBILE MUSIC TECHNOLOGY
FOURTH INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP
AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS, 6-8 MAY 2007
http://www.mobilemusicworkshop.org

Submission deadline: 12th March 2007

Combining music and mobile technology promises exciting future developments
in a rapidly emerging field. Devices such as mobile phones, Walkmans and
iPods have already brought music to the ever-changing social and geographic
locations of their users and reshaped their experience of the urban
landscape. With new properties such as ad hoc networking, Internet
connection, and context-awareness, mobile music technology offers countless
new artistic, commercial and socio-cultural opportunities for music
creation, listening and sharing. How can we push forward the already
successful combination of music and mobile technology? What new forms of
interaction with music lie ahead, as locative media and music use merge into
new forms of everyday experiences?

This series of annual workshops began to explore and establish the emerging
field of mobile music technology in 2004. This fourth edition of the Mobile
Music Workshop in 2007 offers a unique opportunity to participate in the
development of mobile music and hands-on experience of cutting-edge
technology.

This year’s workshop is hosted by STEIM and Waag Society in Amsterdam, The
Netherlands, and partners with the Futuresonic Festival in Manchester,
England, taking place later the same week. The programme of the workshop
will consist of keynote presentations from invited speakers, peer-reviewed
paper presentations, poster sessions, in-depth discussions about the crucial
issues of mobile music technology, demos of state-of-the-art projects,
break-out sessions and live events. Registered participants will take part
in hands-on sessions conducted by leaders in the field. In addition to
traditional presentation sessions, the programme includes events open to a
general audience, facilitating the presentation of artworks and
technological breakthroughs to a wider public.

The Mobile Music Workshop sets the stage for a collaboration that brings
together leading institutions in both experimental electronic music and
mobile media. STEIM (the studio for electro-instrumental music) is a centre
for electronic music production well known in the performing arts. STEIM
promotes the idea that Touch is crucial in communicating with electronic and
digital arts technologies, a vision that over the years has given birth to
physical, sensor-based musical instruments. Waag Society is a research and
development institute in the fields of networked art, education and creative
industries. Waag develops platforms for artists to reach society through
networked collaboration, media streaming, and locative media.

CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS AND WORKS

We invite practitioners, artists, designers, hackers and researchers from
all areas, including music, technology development, new media, sound-art,
music distribution, cultural/media studies, locative media and industry to
submit work and register to attend.
Don’t miss this chance to help shape the mobile music landscape of the
future!
Participants are encouraged to submit their work in mobile music technology
to the categories below. The partnership with the Futuresonic Festival
(http://www.futuresonic.com/) allows those coming to Europe to make a single
trip to attend both events.

* Papers

We invite submissions of workshop papers presenting new projects, approaches
or reflections exploring the topic of mobile music. Potential submissions
could include but are not limited to mobile music systems or enabling
technologies, interface design, legal issues, user studies, ethnographic

Apple’s iPhone-idea takes market by storm

Nokia N95 compares well with iPhone

Apple goes with its strength: packing its success functions of iTunes, iPod MP3 payer and widgets into the iPhone.
Apple goes with its strength: packing its success functions of iTunes, iPod MP3 payer and widgets into the iPhone.
Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs drove the market, including investors, to frenzy with his MacWorld iPhone announcement. The actual data that is available right now, however, does not speak of real break through.

Nokia N95 compares quite well iPhone, as does HTC’s Windows Mobile 5 phone.

IPhone is still six month away, at least, and we have only the data that Apple has put out with a warning that technical qualities might change before the device hits the market.

Much of the promise and frenzy has to do with user interface and it is based on a multitouch screen. Apple is known for its interface design but we judge the end result only with final product. As always with interfaces, the proof of the pudding in eating.

Soft keyboard might or might not work well for mobile phone functions; at least it will take quite a bit to get used to for those of us that have used hard keys for years.

Nokia N95 will be available by the end of March and it specs have been published. HTC P3300 is already available.

The table below compares the technical data available of the three devices. The data we have of iPhone is actually quite sketchy. The main differences are in the operating systems, the screens/interfaces, network support and built in GPS-chips.

With N95, which is built on the same platform as N93, we have a fairly good of the screen and interface functions. With iPhone we have trust Jobs and flash-presentations. HTC P3300 is available and anyone can test it.

The big difference might be the fact than N95 is the only 3G-HSDPA device of the three. It has been said that it a 3G phgone is ten times more demanding to design and build than a GSM phone. It that is true, Apple and HTC have their work cut out for them.

Audio tour of London as “Opera for One”

December 10th, 2006 by atau

NEW OPERA CREATES ‘SOUNDTRACK FOR THE ERA OF CLIMATE CHANGE’

Today sees the launch of And While London Burns - a compelling
collision of thriller, opera and guided walk that dramatically
explores London’s Square Mile and its role in climate change.

An ‘opera for one’, it takes the audience equipped with an
mp3-player on a walking audio adventure through the skyscrapers,
streets and alleyways of the City.

This unusual work catapults the climate crisis from the cold realms
of science and economics into the emotional world of culture.

And While London Burns leads the headphone-wearing participants on a
mystery tour, experiencing the City through the eyes of a tormented
financial worker, who encounters Roman ruins, real life City
characters, bank trading rooms, buried rivers, and relics from the
Great Fire. The audio tour explores the role of companies including
BP, Royal Bank of Scotland and Swiss Re in fueling climate change.

Starring recent Olivier Award nominee Douglas Hodge[1], and produced
by award -winning arts company PLATFORM,[2] the track is downloadable
for free from http://www.andwhilelondonburns.com and can be
experienced at any time of the week.

Pre-viewing theatre critic Robert Butler writes [3]: “The journey
becomes a magical mystery tour, a London walk, a political essay, a
short story and a requiem”

James Marriott [4], co-writer, says: “The theme of this opera is not
fiction, and this is emphasised by it being staged in real space,
among real characters. This is a soundtrack for the era of climate
change”.

John Jordan [5], fellow librettist, continued: “We know the numbers,
graphs, models and terrifying predictions of the climate catastrophe
that faces us, but until we are truly moved to feel the scale of the
crisis, then there is little hope that our society will go beyond the
cataclysmic scenario of business as usual.”

Composer Isa Suarez’s [6] stirring score evokes London’s fiery past,
oil drenched present and a dark unknowable future and is performed by
some of the UK’s best contemporary musicians including BBC Jazz award
winning clarinettist Alan Barnes and acclaimed cellist Robin Michael.
She describes And While London Burns as a “requiem for the warming
world.”

Back from New York

December 4th, 2006 by atau

Just back from New York - I visited Tom Igoe at NYU’s ITP program. A great lab. They are quite interested in sustainability at the moment. For mobile stuff, they have some sponsorship from Nokia, and are working w/ the Series 60 phones, in their case, the N80. A colleague from Australia was there, and they also just got a bunch of N93’s. So our choice of the N70 for Mosomuso/Net_Derive was probably the right choice at the time.

Meanwhile Naceur has some disappointing news for the Trolltech Qtopia Greenphone - no 3G, no EDGE. . . it’s only GPRS. Hard to do anything in mobile music w/ that kind of bandwidth… So the search for a viable mobile phone platform continues.

Back to ITP - it seems that they have integrated Processing as a library into the Eclipse IDE. Exactly what we started to look at w/ Lorys. I will be getting more info.

If this is possible, that plus sound synthesis possibilities w/ Jsyn . It seems like live audio streaming can be done in Java w/ Javasonics - an interesting comparison here.

It’d be interesting to see how much of this could run on a mobile phone….
